 History and Evolution of Single-

Crystal Technology

Single-crystal casting is not a new concept. Earlier methods of producing directionally solidified and single-crystal components were slow and primarily suited to research and specialized applications.

Beginning around 2005, Dr. Kermanpur, Mr. Mehrara, and Mohammad Pishyar worked on accelerating and improving the directional-solidification process. A key element of this work was the precise use of computer-based casting and solidification simulation to analyze, predict, and control the solidification process.

Combined with Liquid Metal Cooling (LMC), this work significantly reduced processing time and demonstrated a much faster approach to producing directionally solidified turbine components. Advances of this kind helped move controlled-solidification technologies toward broader industrial application.
